My friend Chris just got a new Focus Izalco Pro, and he was itching to ride it. He asked me to ride to Philly with him and I decided to at the last minute. Chris has been riding fixed specifically, and has ridden, hung-with and even set the pace for groups of us on road bikes. This would be his maiden voyage on a new bike and entry into the world of gears.
We met up at Dough in Brooklyn which has the most ridiculously amazing Doughnuts. The plan was to start there, and end up with a fat cheesesteak in Philly. When you are a cyclist, you can get away with this sorta shit. Its worth killing yourself in the saddle to earn the right to destroy some shitty food.
We followed this cue sheet from NYCC.org: NYC to Philly cue sheet
Chris ended up getting 5 flat tires total. First he got 1, then 2, then a 3rd, and then both at once! The tires that came with his new bike were shit. We only had 3 tubes, 2 CO2's, a small pump and patches with us. We had to patch 2 tubes on the road which sucked. All the flats probably cut an hour off of our time.
Besides the flats, the ride was awesome. There were a few nice decents where we hit 40-45mph without peddling. There were very few sketchy spots. We plugged the cue points into Chris's Garmin 500 and it worked without any issues. All in all a smooth ride. I clocked just under 120 miles for the day, and no flats for me!
